Professional Gestalt Psychotherapy for Mental Health and Well-being

When you change just one thing effectively, outcomes change and the ripple effect can be far reaching: impacting significantly on our self-esteem, our self-confidence and our sense of agency.

Find out what a difference it can make to talk to a professional listener who can help and provide a safe space free of judgement.

We live in a time where our understanding of mental health is undergoing a fundamental reassessment; light is being shone on new pathways to better mental health. The Lots Road Therapy Practice uses a therapeutic approach.

I understand that sometimes the normal, reliable support systems offered by family, friends and colleagues is not always enough to get us through the situation or challenge we are confronted with.

There is a need for someone who is professionally trained, who can listen, is non-judgemental and who can help you understand and work through these challenging moments. I work primarily from a Gestalt approach, which is both holistic and relational. Gestalt psychotherapy focuses on here and now emerging experience, “process” more than outcome.

When we truly understand why it is that we react (often sub-optimally) to certain situations that do not deliver the desired outcomes we seek, working together with a therapist, we can become aware of what it is that blocks us and with that awareness we can make different choices. We can explore the impact of these choices, initially in the therapy room, and then experiment with applying these different choices in our lives.

The body is as capable as the brain in informing our moods.

No longer is mental health purely the domain of psychiatric medicine, the body is every bit as important as the brain in determining good mental health. I examine every aspect of my patient’s lifestyles, from how they sleep, what they eat, to the quality of their relationships and to where they find meaning, purpose and peace in their lives.

I don’t just offer therapy for adults:

I saw how vital psychotherapy is for children and adolescents, helping them to better understand their emotions and therefore provide them with the tools to manage surroundings they previously felt uncomfortable with.

Before I was a psychotherapist, I was a teacher and during this time I worked with a huge variety of children and teenagers of differing abilities. I taught some unhappy children and witnessed, first-hand, the struggles some children and teenagers face in the classroom, the school environment and in their family lives.

Experience suggests that the anxiety so many patients bring into my consulting room, stems from the habits that have become intrinsic to our modern way of living.

It is important to understand that this is not the complete picture of our mental well-being. Physiology shares the space with true psychological disturbance, brought on by trauma, bereavement and loss, attachment issues, addictions; the list is extensive.

When physiological anxiety is understood and neutralised, it allows the patient and therapist to then work with the true and disturbing emotions brought on by real and challenging events in our lives.

Poor sleep, insufficient nutrition and the intrusion of social media, very often late at night, all combined can impact our physical and mental health quite negatively.

Qualifications and experience:

I have a background in both business and teaching, before qualifying as a Therapeutic Counsellor in 2009. I spent 14 years teaching languages and ICT to 11–18-year-olds in comprehensive schools in the Midlands. The experience of which deeply enriched my capacity for patience, tenacity and working with emotional intelligence.

I grew up in a diplomatic family and spent most of my childhood growing up in different countries. I speak fluent French and can work therapeutically in French.
